Owen Howard, a junior at Florida State University (FSU), embodies a unique blend of curiosity, academic ambition, and a love for history and biology. Diagnosed at an early age as being on the autism spectrum, Owen possesses an uncanny ability to take deep dives into subjects that captivate his interest—a characteristic he shares with many others on the spectrum. Born in North Carolina, Owen displayed an inquisitive nature from an early age, with interests ranging from penguins and jellyfish to volcanoes and historical events. These childhood fascinations served as the foundation for his later academic pursuits.

Growing up, Owen was deeply influenced by his grandparents from Cape Cod, who nurtured his love for New England and its rich cultural heritage. A devoted New England Patriots fan, he admired players like Mike Vrabel and frequently cheered for his favorite team. His enthusiasm for sports extended to his unwavering support for FSU football, a passion ignited during a thrilling game against Wake Forest on October 15, 2015. In that game, Dalvin Cook’s remarkable 97-yard touchdown run left a lasting impression on a young Owen. Additionally, he is a devoted fan of Duke basketball, finding inspiration in their storied legacy and competitive spirit.

Owen’s academic interests began to take shape in middle school, where he gravitated toward world history and biology as his favorite subjects. This passion carried into high school and eventually college, where he chose to major in both history and biology at FSU. Within history, Owen is particularly fascinated by the Byzantine Empire, delving into its rise and fall to understand its complexities and enduring influence on the modern world.

His biology studies focus on spatial gene expression patterns in the vertebrate brain, with a special interest in how behavioral changes, such as mating calls and other vocalizations, affect gene expression. This interdisciplinary approach reflects Owen’s ability to connect diverse fields of study, underscoring his intellectual curiosity and drive.

Outside of his coursework, Owen is engaged in a side research project examining the harmful effects of internet silos on society. He is particularly interested in how these silos contribute to the spread of misinformation and the entrenchment of false beliefs. By exploring this critical issue, Owen aims to shed light on the societal challenges posed by digital communication and propose strategies to mitigate their impact.

Recently, Owen has become deeply committed to the values of anti-discrimination and civil rights, believing in the importance of equality and fairness for all. These principles guide his interactions and academic pursuits, reflecting his broader dedication to creating a more inclusive society.

His appreciation also marks Owen’s journey toward family and his connection to his roots. His grandparents’ stories of Cape Cod and his visits to the region have instilled in him a deep respect for history and a sense of place. His love for New England’s traditions and his admiration for sports heroes like Mike Vrabel highlight his well-rounded personality, blending academic rigor with personal passions.

As Owen continues his studies at Florida State University, he exemplifies the qualities of a dedicated scholar with a bright future ahead. Whether unraveling the mysteries of the Byzantine Empire, advancing knowledge in spatial gene expression, or addressing contemporary societal issues through his research, Owen Howard is poised to make meaningful contributions to academia and society. His journey reflects a commitment to learning and a curiosity that promises to shape his path for years.
